  1. How can a Beauty Business Start Up Mentor Help You?

    Posted on

It is an exciting yet daunting time for newly qualified beauty or holistic therapists when they start up their own business.  Whilst many beauty and holistic training courses provide knowledge and skills to safely provide treatments, there is often a lack of information about the exact steps you need to take to start up your own beauty business.

With the right guidance and information from a business mentor, the start-up phase can be made a lot more enjoyable and easy.  Typically, your mentor will provide you with a clear road map of what you will need to do to get from where you are now to where you want to be and what decisions and steps you will need to make and take.

Typically, your beauty business start-up mentor will provide you with information and guide you to figure out your action plan and action steps.  There is an emphasis on personal responsibility, your mentor will not do the work for you, but will be by your side every step of the way.  The types of areas of your new business that you will explore and work on will be:

    • Business Vision and Business Plan for your 1st year of trading
    • Start-up Costs
    • Start Up Funding and budget
    • Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
    • Data protection Procedures
    • Terms and Conditions for the provision of treatments
    • Legal structure e.g. sole trader, limited company
    • Marketing plan
    • Financial systems
    • Choosing premises
    • Employing Staff (where applicable)

Ideally, your beauty business mentor should be someone who has had or still has direct experience of working within the holistic or beauty industry; that way you have direct access to their years of knowledge, skills and experience.

Will a Business Mentor tell me what to do?

No. Your mentor will provide you with the information that you need in terms of the steps that you need to take to get from A to Z, but will not make any decisions for you. So, for example, your mentor will not tell you to use Facebook for your online marketing; they will advise you of your options available for online marketing but ultimately you will make the choice.

Who needs a Beauty Business Start-Up Mentor?

Typically, a business start-up mentor is for anyone who is newly qualified in beauty or holistic therapies, may have lots of work experience, knowledge and skills from being an employee, but who has no experience of running their own business.

How long will I need a Mentor for?

This depends on each individual, what previous work experience they have, how quickly they can work through each action step in their start-up plan and what support they have available to them.

Ordinarily, a business mentor will work with a newly qualified therapist for 12 weeks and in some cases for up to the end of their first year of trading.

    1. They will provide you with information
    2. Help you to create your action plan
    3. You will then get on with your action steps & be able to reach out to them if you need to
    4. Have check-in calls with your mentor every 1 to 2 weeks.

If you are interested in learning more about Beauty Business Mentoring, I will be launching my program in Spring 2022, and as the program will be run online and via live video coaching calls, it will be open to all newly qualified therapists who are based within the UK.

  2. Tips for Running your Own Professional Beauty Business from Home

    Posted on

If you want to make sure that you get the best result out of your home business, then you are in the right place. Here you can find out the basics of running a beauty service, without having to worry about doing hours of research.

    Pay Attention to Legalities

If you want to run a business from your home, then you may need to try and get permission from your mortgage provider or even your landlord. It’s very likely that you will also need to take out some kind of insurance too. Other factors include having to sign up with a tax service. Of course, giving health and safety some forethought will also help you out a lot here, so make sure that you keep that in mind as much as possible.

How to Transform your Home into a Business

It’s vital that you think about the logistical factors that stand between you and your business. Do you have all of the right tools to facilitate your business? Start by assessing your rooms, and find out if you have enough space to give massages, lashes or even make-up. You also need to make sure that you have the right furniture for your guests too. Of course, at this point, you ideally need to budget as well. You need to think about the cost of buying all of the equipment for your company, and this can include massage chairs, nail desks, and storage units.

    Client Comfort

Are you happy for all of your clients to have their hair washed or rinsed in your bathroom? If not then you may not want to opt for a colour service for your hairdressing business. You may want to opt for dry cuts instead. If you have the space, you may want to have a backwash unit. Either way, little things like this are important to consider when you think about turning your home into a business. When you have been able to assess everything that your clients are going to need to be comfortable, you can then think about the services or even the treatments that you are going to offer to them.

    Marketing

Hairdressers tend to find a lot of new business through word of mouth. You have to make sure that you position yourself as being a local service that can provide a service from home. Ask the clients you have now what they think of you, and if they would be happy to recommend you. You may also want to talk about introductory offers as well, as this could help people to get the motivation they need to give your business a go.

    Power of Social Media

Do your best to leverage the power of social media. Set up a Facebook or even an Instagram page. This will give you the chance to encourage your friends and your family to share your business page for you. You can also include your address so that people know where to find you. This is the best way for you to get things moving.

If you would like to learn more I have an Beauty or Holistic Business Start Up accredited online course available, which you can study at home at your own pace.  It is jam-packed with essential information and useful checklists to help guide you through that all-important start-up phase.
